Violette Szabo was born on the 26th June 1921. Her mother was French and her father, an Englishman. Violette’s parents met during WWI. Violette’s childhood was spent in Paris, later moving to London. She attended Brixton Secondary Grammer. At the age of 14, she left school and became a hairdresser’s assistant. At the start of WW2 Violette met French officer Etienne Szabo. Etienne was of Hungarian descent. They met at the Bastille Day parade in London and married on the 21st August 1940. Violette got pregnant, and never saw Etienne again. He was killed in the Battle of El Alamein in October 1942.
